UCINCINNATI — Yolanda Vázquez, Professor of Law at the University of Cincinnati College of Law, has been named a Visiting Fellow at the Migration Policy Centre at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence, Italy. The fellowship began in January 2022 and she will hold the position through mid-August 2022. In the role of Visiting Fellow, Vázquez will research the migration laws and policies developed by the European Union (EU) and Italy to stop the flow of irregular migration from Africa. Specifically, she will focus on the ways in which the EU and Italy have turned to neighboring countries in North Africa to enforce its migration laws and analyze the impact of that decision. Her research at EUI will inform her study of the U.S./Mexico relationship, exploring the role that race and racism may have contributed to immigration laws and policies. “The chance to spend time conducting research at the Migration Policy Centre with interdisciplinary researchers from around the globe is incredible. I’m grateful to have this opportunity to work with scholars dedicated to exploring complex questions around global migration, fostering policy dialogues, and contributing to migration policy debates in Europe and beyond,” said Professor Vázquez. “I look forward to engaging in my research and learning from the wealth of knowledge that is available and is produced at the MPC.”
