PENN LAW — On Friday, March 4, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus will deliver the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School’s 2022 Leon C. and June W. Holt Lecture in International Law. Dr. Tedros will speak about the World Health Assembly’s recent consensus and global process currently underway to draft and negotiate a convention, agreement, or other international instrument under the Constitution of the WHO to strengthen pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response. Following his talk, Dr. Tedros will be joined by Antonia Villarruel MSN’82, Professor and Margaret Bond Simon Dean of Nursing and Senior Fellow of Penn’s Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics; Eric Feldman, Heimbold Chair in International Law, Professor of Medical Ethics & Health Policy, and Law School Deputy Dean for International Programs; and Betha Igbinosun LLM’20, SJD’23, whose research focuses on health policy in sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Tedros was elected WHO Director-General for a five-year term by WHO Member States at the Seventieth World Health Assembly in May 2017. He is the first WHO Director-General elected from a pool of multiple candidates and the first person from the WHO African Region to head the world’s leading public health agency. After taking office, Dr. Tedros initiated the most significant transformation in the WHO’s history and focused its work on the mission to “promote health, keep the world safe, and serve the vulnerable.”
